Ubuntu 8.10 Intrepid Ibex Release

Hi everybody, ComputerGuy6 here.

Well, I've been testing and playing around with the Ubuntu Linux OS lately. For those of you who don't know about it, go to www.ubuntulinux.org to find out more about it. For those of you who are familiar with Linux, you might know about it.
Anyway, since Linux is free, and you can change and modify the parts of the Linux Kernel freely, I've downloaded a CD image of Ubuntu 8.10 Intrepid Ibex Release Desktop Edtition, and I've installed it as my second OS.
So far, it's been working pretty good, and the words you are seeing right now have been typed using Ubuntu. My laptop is a Dell Inspiron 640m which I bought 1 and a half years ago, and it's built for Microsoft Windows Vista, not Linux, so I was worried if it would work or not. I burned the CD, and inserted it into my laptop, and then the Live Installer showed up. It said that I could install Ubuntu just like a normal computer program, alongside Windows, using the same partition, or I could boot from the CD and use the rugular installation and create another partition for Linux.
The second option failed, so I used the first option, which was faster. Since it COULD install alongside Windows WITHOUT a special partition, plus it had a SPECIAL INSTALLER made for installing it alongside Windows, that gave me some more confidence, because there was a good chance that it would work properly. After installing, I rebooted into Ubuntu, and it turned out that it ALREADY had all the Windows drivers installed. That ment that I could write emails and surf the net INSTANTLY, right after installing. It was pretty impressive.
I searched the Ubuntu Wiki about hardware not functioning, and it turned up "Ubuntu Laptop Testing". All that stuff was for installing Ubuntu on laptops, and testing to see if they would work. I searched my laptop, and it turned out that there was one CRUCIAL problem, the MediaDirect button.
All Dell Inspiron 640m's come with buttons for entertainment, such as Play/Pause, Stop, Mute Sound... but they also come with a "MediaDirect" button.
That button was for starting the Dell MediaDirect software, which just a copy of Cyberlink PowerCinema preinstalled.
When Ubuntu is installed, it does not recognise the special partition made for MediaDirect, and when you press the MediaDirect button while Ubuntu is running, it messes up the whole partition and OS, and without an OS recovery system, you'll lose ALL your files, AND the Ubuntu OS.
That's why I've been very careful with my laptop while runnung Ubuntu.
It's faster then Windows, do I've been using it a lot lately.
Fellow Ubuntu users, PLEASE post me a comment, because I'm new to Ubuntu, and there's probably some important things that I don't know about.

Have a nice day!

Halloween!

Well, it was Halloween a while ago, right?

In China, there is no Halloween normally.
That's kinda sad to hear.
But not in all places.
At the Xing Hai Guo Bao (星海国宝), my apartment building, there are many people from foreign countries like Singapore, Japan, and Sweden, and at Halloween night, they all get together for a party.
My school, the Dalian Maple Leaf Foreign Nationals School, is practically the same as an average Canadian public school, and of course, they have a special Halloween day where you can dress up in costumes, and bring candy to share. It was really cool and fun.
After school on Halloween day, I rode the school bus home, and quickly changed clothes and had a snack, and I was down at the main lobby and spa at about 4:30 pm. Unfortunately, I didn't really like my costume from last year, so this year, I dropped the costume thing. I went down in normal clothes and a thick jacket, and we set off for trick-or-treating at around 4:40 pm. We only got to trick-or-treat at some of the houses that were participating, and they were all in the four apartment buildings that are in our complex.
In my group, the kids were crazy and uncontrollable, and they screamed and ran where ever they went. Hearing them scream their heads off was torture, but I continued on because I wanted the candy.
Well, the crazy kids never calmed down, even at the end, but at least I came back with a basket full of candy. Sigh.
But anyway, it was better than I predicted. I thought that when I got to China, Halloween would be over for me. But I was wrong, and I'm happy about it, because then I can still mooch the candies like I use to.

How was your Halloween like?
Send me that in the comments! :-)

Wishing you a good day in my paradise,

ComputerGuy6 (more accurately known as Ojaser6)

Ugggh...

Hi again.

UUUUUUUUUUGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!
Being sick with the cold AND being allergic to dust and pollen is not a very good thing when you're in Dalian, China.
I know I'll get better sometime this week, but in the meantime, I'll have to deal with it.
It's not something that happens all the time for the rest of you, but in China...
Well, there's just TOO much dust and pollen around this place, so I guess my allergy won't go away anytime soon.
UUUUUUGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I GTG, 'cause my throat is BURNING!!!!
:(

My Grandparents Came and Went

Well, about two weeks ago, my grandparents came to visit all the way from Tianjin.
I'm kind of happy about this, because living in a huge house with practically no one inside except me and my parents is kind of creeping me out lately. Even though the apartment building that we live in is the most luxurious in the city and isn't very old, but there are creaking noises everywhere, and sometimes, I don't get enough sleep because of them.
I never get enough sleep, anyway. Not if you sleep at 10:30 pm, and get up at 7:00 pm!
Anyway, my grandparents don't go to bed very early, but they always wander around the house doing this and that, so at least it's not so empty anymore. It was pretty good having them around, but a few hours ago, they left, which means the house is empty again.
Oh well. There's nothing I can do about it.

First Entry!
